2022 eyewear industry data and 2023 forecasts

Due to its strong international positioning, in 2022, the Italian eyewear industry performed well in the international market, including 830 companies and 18,250 employees, but inflation and economic uncertainty also had an impact. According to ANFAO's preliminary forecast for 2022, Italy's total eyewear production in 2022 will be 5.17 billion euros, an increase of 24% compared to 2021. Exports of frames, sunglasses and lenses, which account for about 90% of the industry's production, increased by 22.5% compared to 2021 to around €5 billion. The United States has traditionally been the main export market for the eyewear industry, with a share of more than 30%, an increase of 20.2% compared to 2021. The widespread concern in the first half of 2023 is the increase in costs in energy, raw materials, shipping, services, logistics, packaging, etc., which are estimated to have doubled on average compared to pre-pandemic levels. This forces companies to operate at lower and lower profit margins, putting their own survival at risk, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.

From "HOW TO? "At the beginning, it is a series that tells about the actual day-to-day activities that take place in the optical store: realistic content on different topics, such as style consultations, point-of-sale renovations, marketing and communication, events as a means of communication, etc., which will take place next week at MIDO. Each conference, currently planned for four, will take place in the OTTICLUB space in Hall 3 and will feature renowned speakers from the most diverse industries, some even from outside the eyewear industry. The date and time are accessible online www.mido.com.

In addition, there are two special projects: Saturday, February 4, 10:30, "Enhancing Women in Optical Leadership" presentation, which supports women in the Italian and international eyewear industry on the path to leadership careers. Historically, the employment rate of women in the eyewear industry has been high (60%), however, this is not fully reflected in the participation of women in managerial positions (22% of managers). ANFAO has decided to work with local and international associations to actively contribute to raising awareness, promoting an inclusive corporate culture, encouraging continuing education and promoting networking. Discussions on gender equality in eyewear industry leadership will also revolve around the Observatory, and guidelines will be developed for pilot projects on women's empowerment education and the promotion of inclusive corporate cultures.

On Sunday, February 5 at 11 a.m., MIDO will host the Campagna Amica Foundation, which will present "I cibi della vista e del benessere" (Food for Vision and Health). Campagna Amica was founded in 2008 under the impetus of Coldiretti (Italian Farmers' Federation) to develop initiatives that fully reflect the value and dignity of Italian agriculture, highlighting its key role in protecting the environment, land, traditions, culture and health. Public health, like environmental resources, is a common good and is even recognized in the Constitution as an inalienable right and duty of every citizen.

Nutrition is clearly the first element of broad health. At this particular moment, the vast majority of diseases that threaten Western society are due to overfeeding, which fatigues and puts most of the body's organs and systems at risk. Excess calories, vitamin deficiencies, and mineral salt deficiencies lead to various types of serious imbalances, including vision-related.
At MIDO, the Campagna Amica Foundation will present the early stages of a document prepared in collaboration with prominent representatives in the medical field on topics ranging from cancer prevention to eye care. Chapters focusing on different organs and systems emphasize the links between nutrition, physiology, and various functions of the body. This collaborative effort will be formalized by the establishment of a medical scientific committee on the subject. The committee will meet semi-annually to publish, design, and share best practice pathways. During the session, the focus will be on vision and foods that promote it, and why not.
